All you have to do is be a good listener. Nobody really wants to keep secrets, not even the dead. People leave clues everywhere, and if you pay attention, you can piece them together.

I know people are always concerned about whether it would be awkward to tell someone what moments like this mean to them. I never realized how incredibly not awkward it would be hear this sort of stuff until I got older and had a kid. If my kid's friend asked me to braid their hair and then thanked me because of something like this? I would never stop crying. I would also never stop hugging them. Which now that I think about it would probably make it awkward...
